Museum appeals for funds to restore Freud's couch
10/10/2013
London's Freud Museum has launched an appeal to raise thousands of dollars to pay for repairs to the pioneering psychoanalyst's famous couch.

After more than a century of use, the couch, which currently sits covered in an ornate rug, is in need of re-stitching now that the seams have split.

"There are seams that have actually ripped and there's horse hair that's coming out," Dawn Kemp, acting director of the Freud Museum said. We really need very gentle work to be done on it. Emphasising the importance of preserving the famous couch, historian Lisa Appignanesi said: "The couch stands in for therapy. It stands in for psychoanalysis. "It's an iconic image. It's been in hundreds of cartoons, hundreds of jokes. It's everywhere."
